hCG is the 1st hormone unique to pregnancy, which is why it is used for pregnancy tests. It isn’t produced if you are not pregnant.

Small amounts of hCG are secreted from the pituitary gland under normal conditions, and can be elevated in some pituitary tumors (but this is a very rare cause).

I don’t know much about this, the link below mentions some conditions in which hCG is hypersecreted (which because of its TSH like activity affects T4 levels).

Post-menopausal women can have very low but detectable amounts of hCG – I think this comes from the pituitary. Women with hydatidiform mole or choriocarcinoma (gestational trophoblastic disease) can have extremely high levels – higher than in pregnancy and importantly they can be so high that they swamp a pregnancy test stick and give a false negative.

In men hCG is often detected when there is a testicular tumour. Teratomas can also produce hCG.

Otherwise hCG should not be present.
